Warm or cold balcony glazing: what is the difference
The same balcony can be glazed in two fundamentally different ways. The choice depends not on budget but on how you plan to use the space.

Cold glazing: when it is enough
A light aluminium profile with single glass protects from rain, wind, dust and noise. It does not retain heat, but it barely loads the balcony slab. A good choice if the balcony is used for storage, drying laundry or plants.
Warm glazing: what is inside
Warm glazing is built from a PVC profile with a double- or triple-chamber glazing unit. But the window alone is not enough: to turn a balcony into a room, the perimeter must be insulated too.
- PVC profile with seals and a low-emissivity glazing unit
- insulation of floor, walls and ceiling
- airtight installation joints
- interior finishing
Side by side
| Cold | Warm | |
|---|---|---|
| Profile | Aluminium | PVC |
| Glass | Single pane | Glazing unit |
| In winter | Like outdoors, minus the wind | Usable as a room |
| Load on the slab | Low | Higher |
| Purpose | Storage, drying | Study, lounge |
Three common mistakes
- Putting single-chamber glass into a "warm" frame — condensation will appear in winter.
- Insulating the floor but leaving gaps in the installation joints — heat escapes through them.
- Merging the balcony with the room without approval: it is a redevelopment, so check the procedure with local authorities.
Choosing with three questions
- Do you need this room in winter? If not, cold glazing is enough.
- Will the slab and parapet bear the extra load? This is checked during the measurement.
- Is there budget for insulation and finishing, not just windows? Without them, warm glazing will not deliver.
Care after installation
- ventilate regularly: humidity on a balcony rises faster than in a room
- clear the drainage holes at the bottom of the frame
- lubricate the hardware every six months
- in winter, watch that condensation does not build up on the glass
