Automatic roller shutters: motor, remote and smart home
A motorised roller shutter goes up and down at the press of a button and, if you like, does it by itself: opening in the morning and closing in the evening. Here is what the system consists of and how to pick the controls.
What the system consists of
- a curtain of slats and a box above the window
- a tubular electric motor inside the shaft
- limit switches that stop the curtain at the top and bottom positions
- the control unit: remote, wall switch or app
Control options
| Option | What it gives you |
|---|---|
| Wall switch | Simple local control, like a light switch |
| Radio remote | Control from anywhere in the room, in groups of shutters |
| Timer and scenes | Raise in the morning and close in the evening automatically |
| Sun and wind sensors | Protection from overheating and gusts |
| Smart home | Shared scenes with lighting and climate |
What to consider
- Size and weight of the curtain: the motor power is chosen for the specific shutter.
- Quiet operation: important for a bedroom.
- Emergency mode: the ability to raise the shutter by hand during a power cut.
- Wiring: the power line is best planned before finishing.
- Compatibility with a smart-home system, if you have one or plan one.
Who needs it
Automation pays off most on large windows, on tall hard-to-reach openings, in houses with several shutters and in garages: the shutter goes up with the remote without leaving the car.
What to ask when ordering
- which motor is fitted and what warranty it has
- whether the shutter can be raised by hand in a power cut
- whether the motor has obstacle detection and protection against the curtain freezing
- whether sensors and smart home can be added later
- what the installation covers: wiring, connection, remote set-up
Safety and reliability
Many motors stop the curtain when it meets an obstacle and prevent the slats from being damaged by freezing. It is worth confirming these functions in advance: they matter most in a garage and on windows that children or pets can reach.
